Back in the studio

Kids are back in school (in-person! full-time!) and I have been so happy to be back in my studio for the last week.

I’ve been working on two larger paintings that I am starting to call “Fire & Ice” as well as another of my smaller lotus paintings, “Sahasrara, I Understand”, representing the crown chakra.

These pieces as well as over 50 other original paintings (it was a very productive year prior to summer) will be available during Silicon Valley Open Studios, September 18 & 19. Save the date for my in-person (wear a mask) open studios. Hope to see you there!

Newest and biggest Valley of the Moon painting

…and I love it! It’s 3 feet x 4 feet and I really struggled with making the same imagery and marks on this scale, translating them from the 9×12, 12×12, and 20×20 originals. Marks needed to be bigger and my usual painting moves needed to be bolder. The impact of these vibrant colors and energetic drips, scratches, and squiggles really hits and I feel like the themes of preservation and celebration of nature and our Sonoma Coast dig deeper at this size. It’s like I’m shouting at this size and whispering at the smaller sizes… “Take care of the earth before all this amazing beauty disappears!”

Here are a few detail photos…

Ah, flow

Just staring at this after losing track of time while working on it all morning…. Ahhhh, flow!

Work like this reminds me that I don’t paint to express what I’m feeling but to create a world that is guilelessly hopeful, empathetic, and honors feelings, emotion, and the not-occasional need for escape.

Valley of the Moon paintings

Four newly finished abstract landscape paintings based on western Sonoma County, “Valley of the Moon.” I love these colors, the deep reds and purples against cool bright greens and blues, and they way they reference fog, vineyards, ocean, rivers, rocky coastlines, oaks and redwoods… And of course, the full moon hanging low over it all.
